When COVID-19 struck in late March, 2020, we sprang into action. Quickly adapting our simulation technology and Web visualization tools, in six days we produced a simple tool for doing scenario modeling regarding the epidemic. It allows you to enter basic epidemiology parameters and estimate the effect of different community spread and provider transmission scenarios on your service’s capabilities and resilience. This view of the COVID-19 Staffing Simulator shows the impact of a range of scenarios on your department’s readiness. These are based on provider transmission of the disease. Fortunately, initial estimates of provider transmission rates have turned out to be pessimistic, but the tool provides valuable insights into your organization’s ability to handle similar events.
We also enhanced Code3 Strategist to enable you to model surges and spikes in activity and evaluate impacts on operational metrics, workload, reliability, and resilience. For example, an uptick in respiratory distress incidents at long term care facilities or in a particular area of your jurisdiction could be modeled.
