Preventing / Mitigating Budget Threats

Our tools have been extremely effective at avoiding harmful reductions in service, mitigating effects of unavoidable cuts, advocating for restoration of services and demonstrating effective stewardship of fiscal resources.

In 2011 (before Code3 Strategist was even a product), our home agency, Corvallis Fire Department used an early version of the software to avoid harmful brownouts. After viewing predicted effects of a brownout on response times and predicted delays on critical calls, the City Council voted unanimously to reject the brownout.

The following year, at the depth of the recession, a station closure was inevitable. The Fire Chief used a slightly enhanced version of the software to advocate for and obtain approval of a plan to preserve staffing and relocate resources closer to the city center, with projected response times remaining constant, City-wide.

Since that time, numerous agencies have used our products to justify and defend budgets:

  • A Northwest metro developed an innovative redeployment plan for medic units to optimize level funding in the face of rapid growth in service demand
  • Several Bay Area departments successfully avoided service reductions or layoffs
  • A small East Coast department advocated to redeploy a crew from its single multi-company station to a satellite location for better coverage, at minimal additional expense
  • A major Texas metro is optimizing deployment of peak staffing units given budget constraints.

Key factors in these successes include the ability to understand and visualize growth trends, and to estimate the impact of increasing demand and/or service reductions on not only immediate performance metrics, but also on an organization’s resilience and ability to respond well across a wide variety of scenarios.
